RV Campgrounds-Choosing the Right Ones

Author: Julie Jacobs

If you are an RVer you know the importance of RV Campgrounds. You may even plan trips based on the locations of your favorite ones. However, if you are new to RVing, you may not be sure of the criteria you should use when you are choosing campgrounds. Here are some tips and ideas to help you get started on planning your next RV adventure:

First, you will obviously need to select your destination. If you are not sure where you would like to go, you may want to consult an RV travel website to see what areas other RVers recommend. They may even have a listing of recommended RV campgrounds.

Once you have chosen your destination you can begin to plan your route. If it is to be a one-day trip to get to your destination you will only need to look at RV campgrounds in that area, but if not, you will want to look at campgrounds spaced at good mileage intervals along your route.

There are a couple of different types of RV campgrounds you can choose from. One type is managed by the National Park Service or Forest Service, or maybe even the State Park Service. The other types are privately owned campgrounds. The government run campgrounds tend to have fewer amenities, but they often have prime locations for those wanting to enjoy the beauties of nature. On the other hand, the privately owned RV campgrounds will have more things like showers, swimming pools, small grocery stores, dumping stations, and hookups for electricity.

If you are looking for activities, both types of RV campgrounds may offer some activities that are included in the cost of the camp, while other activities may require an additional fee. Look for activities that appeal to you and base some of your decision on the RV campgrounds that offer them.

For those that have pets that travel with them, you will need to make sure of the regulations regarding pets in the campground. Many RV campgrounds allow pets, but they must be on a leash at all times when they are outside.

Price is another important consideration. Most RV campgrounds are fairly reasonable, but some have different rates depending on peak seasons, etc. You will need to include the campground fees when you are budgeting for your trip.

Reservations at recreational vehicle campgrounds should be made as soon as possible. Some campgrounds do not allow reservations and some only accept them within a year or less of the dates. Find out what the policy is and get your requests in early. Some of the more popular campgrounds fill up months in advance.

There are many online directories for recreational vehicle campgrounds that you can access and also order in booklet or brochure form for your own use. Use them to plan your next trip.
