Hurricanes and Wine

Author: Lance Winslow

Hurricanes bring with them much damage and destruction and when they do they also cause incredible storm surges and intensive precipitation. Often this excess of rain and water flow causes flood damage costing millions if not billions as the hurricane batters the region.

During the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season we saw many major storms, which caused flooding and consider if you will consider the many wealthy individuals that lived along the coastline they had extensive wine collections, which were in the basement. These extensive wine collections could have been as much as $20,000 to $100,000 per each million-dollar home on the beach.

If you own a wine cellar and you have extensive wine do not expect your homeowners policy to pay for the wine that is lost during a tragic flooding event from a Hurricane. In fact it may be wise to make your cellar waterproof with a special door, which you can seal before you leave for your mandatory evacuation. Once debris gets in it can break bottles and ruin your collection.

This way no matter what the wine is protected until a future date when you can go and collect it. If you have an extensive wine collection it is up to you to consider these things in advance and plan ahead. There are many ways to waterproof a room or a cellar to protect your wine collection. Perhaps you will consider this in 2006.
