Laser Surgery Complications

Author: Tim Gorman

These days, many people who have always worn glasses are looking to laser eye surgery to provide them with an easier and more convenient solution to improving their eyesight. But for people with no experience of laser eye surgery, there is always the worry that the lasers may not be safe. But these days laser eye treatment is a well-tried and trusted remedy. It was first used around 20 years ago and has been constantly refined and improved since. Although it is possible as with all medical practices that there may be complications, it is unlikely and this only affects a very small percentage of those who use this form of vision correction and enhancement. But as with all treatments you should ask your doctor or surgeon about possible risks and complications, so that you can make an informed decision about whether to go ahead with your LASIK eye surgery.

One of the possible laser surgery complications that some people encounter is with their night vision. Although not usually severe, some people experience difficulty in seeing objects in low light situations such as night driving. With most people this is just a temporary situation. After a few days or weeks their vision usually returns to normal in nighttime situations. But for some people, the effects last much longer, if not permanently, although this is quite rare.

Another one of the possible laser surgery complications is starbursts. Although this can be very inconvenient, it can usually be corrected through further laser eye surgery. It usually occurs if light is creeping in around the sides of the area that has been treated previously. Another complication caused by this is that the user can be subject to glare or halos in their vision. These conditions can also usually be corrected with further surgery.

Although the incidence of laser surgery complications is minimal, it is of course too much to those who are in the small percentage that are affected by this. Any medical procedure can carry the risk of complications and anyone considering this or any other medical procedure needs to keep this in mind and make sure that they inform themselves fully of all the risks as well as the benefits before deciding to go ahead.

For most people the benefits of laser eye surgery will usually outweigh the small possibility of complications. But is important to consider everything and talk to the your surgeon or doctor before you make your decision.
