Oscilloscope Repair

Author: Eddie Tobey

An oscilloscope is a device used to represent an electric signal from a piece of electrical equipment. It catches signals from the equipment and displays it in the form of a graph representing voltage on the Y-axis and time on the x-axis. This signal is represented in the form of a dot on the screen. This dot moves continuously across the screen from left to right. Sometimes, the dot also deviates upwards and downwards if there is any deflection in the signal. An oscilloscope is mainly used to test the circuitry or to locate any malfunctioning in any electrical device.

An oscilloscope is a very delicate instrument. It should be ideally used only by professionals though there are some oscilloscopes for amateurs as well. An oscilloscope may require some repair and maintenance from time to time for proper functioning. Sometimes, it may display high speed signals inaccurately. This could be because of the capacitance of the wire in the test probe, which can be corrected by adjusting the screw on the probe.

There are many companies that offer oscilloscope repair services. These companies have state-of-the-art test equipment facilities and often provide repair and calibration services for almost all the major brands of oscilloscopes. Prices for repair and calibration fees start from $70 per hour. Repair includes a basic evaluation of the equipment to determine the exact problem. Customers are informed of the repair cost prior to the repair and the repair is undertaken only after the customer's approval. Some oscilloscopes require repair that can be done only at the manufacturer's site. The repair companies also take up the task of sending them to such sites for repair. Most repair centers also provide warranty on the repairs done, which is generally for 30 days.

Oscilloscope repair can also be attempted by an experienced user. Parts can be obtained from specialized stores or from the manufacturer. Parts can also be obtained from used oscilloscopes that are found on websites like e-bay or any second-hand stores. You can locate good oscilloscope repair centers over the Internet.
