Baseball Playing Longevity, It Must Be The Water

Author: Wiley Channell

Baseball playing longevity never really crossed my mind to ponder the question. The other day I was reading about "Iron Horse" and my mind went to some of the other former Yankees. It gave me pause for thought.

By the way, for those who might not readily know, "Iron Horse" was the nickname for one great baseball player, Lou Gehrig. Not simply by coincident Lou was a New York Yankee with a long consecutive game playing streak. Many well known big league stars had considerable long playing careers; however, the boys in pin stripes are the long playing leaders.

One other modern day player recently honored for his consecutive game playing longevity is Cal Ripkin, Jr.. However going back to "Iron Horse" Gehrig and the New York Yankees.

Check me out and see if you can figure it out. The Yankees located in New York have notoriously retained ball players for long playing tours. Here are some of the names "The Babe" played many years, "Yogi" stayed awhile, "Whitey" kept on keeping on.

Really what was the magic which kept those Yankees right on ticking? Must have been the water.

When lifes longevity comes up, about someone who has lived an extra ordinarily long life, it comes around to someone saying, "It must be the water."

Now since "Eve" has eaten the fruit and gained knowledge then could we not say if you come to the "Big Apple" and drink the water things will happen?

Give it some thought and see if you don't think there may be something to this, "It may be the water?" Forget the water bit here is a baseball fans real trivia question?

If Lou Gehrig, nicknamed the "Iron Horse," played in so many consecutive games to earn a nickname?

Who did he replace in the Yankees line up? Who also had over a decade of playing time with them Yankees? It has to be the water!

Who did "Iron Horse" replace?
