Barry Bonds: Let's Get Off His Back!

Author: John T Jones, Ph.D.

Some years back Baseball banned steroids. They have tested their players for steroids ever since. So why the current investigation? Is it just because some guy wrote a book?

Barry Bonds is the focus of the investigation. He is the top athlete in baseball because he is close to breaking Babe Ruths record. Everybody is watching him including racist and others that hate him. He is getting tons of hate mail. I hope he is getting some mail from his fans too.

Barry Bonds has passed all post-ban tests for steroids. If the tests are sensitive and accurate, what is the problem? He is steroid free just as he says he is.

What if he used steroids before the ban? So what? They were not illegal were they? Baseball is a professional sport. You have to get everything out of your body that it can muster. Doctors can prescribe drugs to improve the performance of a human body. That is what they do for a living. This may or may not have occurred before the ban.

Weight lifters have to use steroids to build their bodies. It is not always allowed in competition and some get caught during testing. From the controversy, I assume that some are not caught. If that is true, the testing is faulty and needs to be corrected.

Steroids can become dangerous and should be prescribed and monitored by an endocrinologist that knows what he is doing. Should there be any more of a restriction than this? Why restrict a persons performance as long as he is under proper care?

The current investigation is under former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, focusing on only steroid use since 2002, when MLB banned performance-enhancing drugs. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Bonds for Bonds biography and other information on the investigation.)

It will sell a lot of books!

I think the probe should have been chaired by an endocrinologist with the focus on testing. If the testing is not accurate and sensitive, drop the ban until it is. A ban has no meaning if the testing is faulty.

I don't think that Mitchell is an endocrinologist. My apologies if he is.

The End
